Note that I visited during Ramadan, streets are less crowded I think but it is an experience in and of itself to have Iftaar with Somalians and to enjoy the Ramadan vibes in the country. Finally, I highly recommend staying in Ocean Hotel which is owned and run by Visit Mogadishu as you will have direct access to the people running your tours. My tour guide was Mr Ahmed who was excellent. He was always on time, respectful, easily adjusted to my requirements, and has excellent knowledge of Somalia and Somalians abroad (having, himself, lived abroad for a few years)! I would highly recommend that you request Mr Ahmed!

Lack of available useful information forced me into those services 2 days... read more before arrival. I"m happy, though, that I went with VisitMogadishu as 1) they never insisted on their standard itineary, but rather accomodated 100% of my wishes; 2) communication was swift, to the point with no questions left unanswered; 3) despite 12 years in business and no 1 choice for travellers, the company is dinamic, developing and responsive; 4) knowledge and experience is obvious. Price is on a high side for solo travelling, however, that's is because of a lack of developed market rather than company's fault. Cheers Visit Mogadishu!

Two vehicles were fitted out in Dubai with 360 degree protection. The cost: $85,000 US. This explains part of the cost of your tour. The rest is the security. I had a three armed soldiers, the driver (Ali's brother) and Ali himself.

The protection works as a stray bullet (in an unrelated non tourist incident) cracked but did not penetrate a passenger side front window.

The two day tour was organized quickly and a surprise. I was nearby in Malawi and didn't have an expectation of organizing it so quickly. Ali responded instantly and within a few hours I had booked flights and was soon there. Someone handed me the official invitation before I reached the customs personnel in the airport which surprised me.

The crew will personally follow you every step of the way from entry to leaving Somalia.

A memorable part of the trip was a solemn memorial and protest associated with a recent tragedy. The suffering is ongoing and all too real. But so is the belief that one day it will end. The diaspora is returning and rebuilding the city.

At that time, one of my patients was a 12 year old girl named... read more Layla who had a GSW- her condition worsened, and she stopped eating- her dying wish was for an apple, which we did not have.

Since she died in 1992, I’ve carried this in my heart for years. The reason I share this story here, is that I wanted to go back to the hospital in Mog where Layla died- to plant a baby apple tree there and dedicate it to Layla and all the children that have died in Somalia.

The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs explains on its website that those of us who have a Spanish passport only need to pay €60 and they give us a "visa on arrival" Well, when I arrived I had problems with the immigration police and they almost kicked me out of the country. Luckily they were there to help me, and even give me a very special price, almost a gift - with which they have not earned any benefit from me - for which I am eternally grateful. They gave me a bargain hotel, meals, armored car, driver, 2 police officers armed with Ak-47, and Ali was with me at all times, ensuring my safety in this country devastated by the war it maintains with the Al Shabbab militia. , an affiliate of Al Qaeda. My experience has been extraordinary in every corner of Somalia's capital, Mogadishu, and we even left the capital towards the southern coast, in the coastal fishing village of Jazeera. An unforgettable experience, and largely thanks to the professionalism of this agency "Visit Mogadishu", rigorous in terms of security and also comfort, offering clean, safe and quality hotels, as well as restaurants and cafes in the city.
