The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs explains on its website that those of us who have a Spanish passport only need to pay €60 and they give us a "visa on arrival" Well, when I arrived I had problems with the immigration police and they almost kicked me out of the country. Luckily they were there to help me, and even give me a very special price, almost a gift - with which they have not earned any benefit from me - for which I am eternally grateful. They gave me a bargain hotel, meals, armored car, driver, 2 police officers armed with Ak-47, and Ali was with me at all times, ensuring my safety in this country devastated by the war it maintains with the Al Shabbab militia. , an affiliate of Al Qaeda. My experience has been extraordinary in every corner of Somalia's capital, Mogadishu, and we even left the capital towards the southern coast, in the coastal fishing village of Jazeera. They provided armed guards to travel with us whenever we left the secure green zone.

However, they also gave us as much freedom as is reasonable in Mogadishu for walking in parts of the city, shopping, visiting the fish market, walking on the secure beaches, a boat ride, etc.

It's not possible at the moment to visit Mogadishu independently without a guide. I highly recommend contacting Visit Mogadishu to provide your guided tour. They also arrange tours to Puntland and other parts of Somalia. Their prices are very fair considering their costs of providing the tours.

Omar was with me throughout, and was patient, answering all my detailed questions and was always very flexible with my dates. Omar was always responsive and gave me personal attention. It was amazing to be in Somalia - especially in Mogadishu. There’s so much history here from the ancient and medieval times with the interesting Italian connection. Ali and Mohamed were with us throughout our stay. They were better than tour guides. They became our friends and gave us much personal attention. They were very knowledgeable about Somalia, its history, current events, socio-economic factors, etc., and current challenges of the country — and had a great humour too. They also shared meals with us including one memorable seafood lunch. They answered all of our questions patiently and always delivered more than asked. Of course safety was our major concern - but they put us at ease. We only travelled in two armoured vehicles, with well trained defensive drivers, and our own dedicated security personnel with us. They planned our routes with much flexibility. They made our security look seamless. We never needed to worry about anything. We saw wonderful sights including Lido beach and other landmarks. We had memorable visits to the fish market and even a boat ride. They showed us many positive things happening in Mogadishu wherein we can see development and also the returning expatriates to help this growth. The Airport Hotel was fantastic - comfortable and the food was great. Omar always checked in with us and visited us at the Hotel. He made sure all was perfect.
