Overview

Cape Guardafui  and Cape HafunTour (The Most Eastern Point of African Continent )

Cape Guardafui, located off the tip of the Horn of Africa, is a fascinating marine strait that lies between eastern Somalia and Socotra in the Arabian Sea. It serves as a critical link to the Gulf of Aden. Notable places of interest in the area include the picturesque Alula Lagoon.

Historical Significance

Cape Guardafui has been known since ancient times, with mentions dating back to the 1st century CE in the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea. In the early 19th century, Somali seamen controlled entry to their ports along this coast while engaging in trade with Aden and Mocha. In 1894, Britain ceded sovereignty over the disputed region, including Cape Guardafui, to Italy.

From 1899, the Italians conducted detailed studies and surveys to construct a lighthouse. A large-scale rebellion against Italian rule in Italian Somaliland was underway during this period. In November 1925 and January 1926, troops guarding the newly built lighthouse and wireless station repelled attacks by several hundred rebels.

Due to damage sustained during these attacks, authorities built a stronger lighthouse. In 1930, a new stone and reinforced concrete lighthouse was inaugurated, designed in the shape of an Italian fascist “Fascio Vittorio.” Although no longer in use, the lighthouse still features the distinctive stone ax blade symbol characteristic of fascist symbolism. A stone lighthouse and radio station, named after Francesco Crispi, were eventually established on the headland in 1930.

Destination Highlights

Cape Guardafui is rich in natural resources, including frankincense, fish, date palms, coal deposits, natural water springs, and livestock, Italian lighthouse in Hafun and Cape Guardafui .
