Somalia Tourism 2026: Tourism & Investment Fair in Mogadishu

Mogadishu, Somalia — September 29

Somalia is entering a new chapter in tourism, with growing attention to its rich cultural heritage, historic destinations, natural landscapes and spectacular Indian Ocean coastline.

On September 29, 2026, Somalia held its Tourism and Investment Fair in Mogadishu to mark World Tourism Day, bringing together government officials, tourism professionals, investors, members of the diplomatic community and private-sector representatives. The fair showcased Somalia’s tourist destinations, cultural heritage, arts and investment opportunities while promoting the country’s emerging tourism industry.

The event, held at Jazeera Aqua Park in Mogadishu, provided a fitting beachfront setting for highlighting Somalia’s coastal tourism potential. Prime Minister H.E. Hamza Abdi Barre, Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism H.E. Abdifatah Qasim Mohamud, senior government officials and members of the diplomatic community attended the event. Organized by the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism, the fair created a platform for dialogue, tourism promotion and investment.

A Country of Diverse Destinations

Somalia offers a wide range of tourism experiences. Its extensive coastline creates opportunities for beach tourism, marine tourism, eco-tourism, fishing, water activities and adventure travel, while historic cities, archaeological sites, traditional markets and cultural traditions provide opportunities for heritage and cultural tourism.

Mogadishu, the capital and principal tourism gateway, remains at the heart of Somalia’s tourism development. Visitors can explore historic Hamarweyne, traditional markets, Lido Beach, Mogadishu Lighthouse, seafood destinations and other cultural and coastal attractions.

Beyond the capital, Puntland offers destinations such as Bosaso, Eyl, Hafun and Cape Guardafui, known for dramatic coastlines and maritime heritage. Somaliland features Hargeisa, Berbera and the renowned Laas Geel rock-art sites. In southern Somalia, Kismayo and Goobweyn provide opportunities for coastal, cultural and nature-based tourism.

Investment and Tourism Growth

Somalia’s emerging tourism market presents opportunities for hotels, resorts, restaurants, tour operators, airlines, transportation companies, travel agencies and digital tourism platforms. Investment in accommodation, infrastructure, destination marketing and tourism technology can contribute to employment and local economic development.

The Somalia Tourism Association (SOMTA) is an important part of the tourism ecosystem, supporting cooperation among tourism stakeholders, professional development and greater private-sector participation.

Digital transformation is also changing how travelers discover and book destinations. E-visas, online hotel reservations, digital payments, travel marketplaces and social media marketing can help connect Somalia’s tourism businesses with international visitors.

Security and Somali Hospitality

Improvements in security and stability in key urban and tourism areas are supporting a gradually developing environment for tourism and investment. Professional tour operators can also provide organized transportation, guides and security arrangements for international visitors.

An important part of the visitor experience is Somali hospitality. Travelers can experience the warmth of local communities, traditional cuisine, culture and everyday Somali life, creating meaningful connections beyond conventional sightseeing.

From Potential to Opportunity

Somalia tourism still faces challenges, including infrastructure, connectivity, skills development, destination facilities and the need for continued investment in cultural heritage and environmental protection. Addressing these challenges will require cooperation between government, the private sector, tourism associations, investors and local communities.

The 2026 Tourism and Investment Fair at Jazeera Aqua Park demonstrated the growing importance of tourism to Somalia’s economic and cultural development. By bringing tourism and investment together, the event highlighted the potential to transform Somalia’s natural and cultural assets into sustainable economic opportunities.

With its rich heritage, diverse destinations, welcoming communities and extensive coastline, Somalia has an opportunity to build a distinctive tourism industry while creating new opportunities for investment, employment, local communities and international visitors.
