Mogadishu fish market: a story of progress

Mogadishu Fish market is one of the main markets for fish suppliers and consumers, different types of fish hung stretch into the distance as far as the eye could see. Namely tuna, blue marlin dolphin fish and sardines.

Normally, fishy smell waft down the entire fish marketplace.  More interestedly fish sellers are seen wearing labor coat with blood everywhere of it and holding meat in one hand and big knife in the other.  A crowd of about 400 comes to buy the fresh fish from Indian Ocean each day.   The busiest hours are at 8:00-11:00 o’clock in the morning. Sometimes one cannot hear anything because of the noise coming from the buyers and sellers.  The visitors are allowed to take picture of local fish sellers on their duties. As visit Mogadishu team try to manage the situation in market to protect the visitor’s security and safety.  When people in market see white man/ lady, they demand to picture with him/her from us.  If there is no pushing and pulling crowd we agree but usually the choice depend on tourist. What concerned us at this point is security and safety issue.  We are humble to accept their demand as long as not exiting risk. Evidently Mogadishu local fish market is the one of the best places tourist attractions to visit as Fishing is extremely important to this country. It is believed that Somalia’s economy depends on three sectors called Agriculture, fishing & livestock.
